Bathroom Medicine Cabinets

My cabinet is Oak. The doors and top are solid wood, but the outside appears to be particle board with laminate, and I don’t think the laminate is . If I sand and prime it, do you think it will turn out OK if I paint it white?

Thanks!

You can totally paint it, and you don’t need to use oil paint either (I know because I repainted everything in my small bath last year and it looks great!)

Sand it, prime it, and ABSOLUTELY use a semi-gloss! (You probably shouldn’t use gloss, semi-gloss is better at repelling water, per my personal paint expert- Floyd over at HD! haha) :)

If the outside is particle board it is most likely a painted on wood grain now. Since it is in the bathroom with moisture all around, seal it first with white shellac and then paint it with oil based enamel and it will be fine.

Wipe the laminate down with liquid sandpaper then prime it with Zinsser oil primer. The primer will dry in one to two hours then lightly sand with 320 grit sandpaper and wipe it down with a tack cloth. (a tack cloth is a cheesecloth coated with shellac) Paint with Rustoleum Satin white Oil Paint as a topcoat using a good bristle brush. The topcoat will dry in four hours then it can be re coated. Lightly sand and tack cloth between coats. Oil finishes hold up better then latex especially in high moisture areas and have longer durability. Open a window and use the bath fan to circulate air. Use mineral spirits for brush cleaning. All items can be purchased at a local home center.Take your time and you will have a professional result.
